- The Boon of Shiva: According to the Shiva Purana and Narmada Purana, Lord Shiva performed intense penance on the Amarkantak hills. His sweat flowed down to form the Narmada River. Shiva blessed the river, proclaiming, “Every pebble (Kankar) on your riverbed will be worshipped as a living form of me (Shankar).”
- The Ganga Connection: Mythological texts state that when the river Ganga felt overburdened by the sins of the humans bathing in her, she took the form of a black cow and bathed in the Narmada to cleanse herself. This established the Narmada as a river of absolute purity that does not absorb sins, making its stones inherently sacred.
- The Banasura Legend: The demon king Banasura performed severe penance to please Lord Shiva. Shiva appeared and granted him a boon, creating thousands of natural Shivlings in the Narmada River so Banasura could worship him anywhere along its banks.
